About Us

Our story

Built by the people who do the job

BASDU has continued to develop and grow, built on the support and expertise of professionals from every part of the security dog sector.

A trained dog is one of the most effective deterrents available to the security industry, but it is also a serious responsibility. The public, clients and the dogs themselves deserve teams that are trained properly and held to account. That belief has guided us from the start, and it shapes everything we do today.

Our community now spans England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We set out what good practice looks like, assess people fairly against it and keep open, checkable records so that clients can buy with confidence.

Our mission

To raise and maintain the standard of security dog handling in the UK through fair assessment, practical training and real care for working dogs.

Our vision

A sector where every team on duty is qualified, every dog is well kept, and anyone can confirm a handler's standing in seconds.

Our values

What we stand for

Transparency

Open, checkable certificates and records. Nothing to hide, everything to show.

Welfare first

A dog that is well treated works well. Welfare is built into every standard we set.

Integrity

Fair, evidence-based assessment, quality-assured so a BASDU certificate means the same everywhere.

Public safety

Dogs under control at all times and used proportionately, within the law.

Standards & compliance

Working within the UK framework

Our guidance sits alongside the legislation and recognised standards that already govern the sector.
